Outcome

1st place

GOAL

Increase in donations to charities while shopping online using Shopware and Tpay

Online shopping has been very popular for a while now. It is such a convenient way of purchase that in 2022 2.14 Billion people worldwide purchased goods online. And this statistics increases every year.

What if with every purchase a donation to charity was made? And it would be accessible directly within the online store with no need from the customer side to install any plugins?

Sounds good, right?

SOLUTION

Charity donation plugin

RESEARCH

Beneficial not only for the charity, but also for the store and customer

According to articles, 50% of charities don’t have any specific digital strategy and 66% of charities are worried they miss out on digital fundraising opportunities

47% of potential donors are turned off by usability problems relating to page and site design.

This is a serious problem that may hinder potential donations.

But from the bright side, with the right solution, customers are willing to donate.

"...checkout charity can make consumers feel what economist James Andreoni calls a warm glow from their giving. These positive feelings, we believe, can lead customers to spend more money in the future at the same [place]. Based on our analysis of sales data, we believe they also felt better about the chain we studied and were more likely to return."

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

There is no such solution in Shopware so far

In Shopware there is no such plugin that allows user to donate while shopping.

In general, for exmaple Google Chrome or Wordpress provide similar plugins for donating money to charities. But actually user is in charge of installing these plugins. Hence, if user wants to install these kind of plugins, then he/she is already aware of the existance of these kind of donation methods and he/she is probably already involved in helping foundations.

But my solution is that "Keep the Change!" plugin is available for all users. So even when user is not privy to donations, he/she will see the donation option anyway. This way helping charities will be more accessible and it can get more people to donate.

THE MAIN INSIGHT

Meets the needs of all sides

Taking into account the sections described above, this plugin meets the 3 most important criteria.

This plugin is accessible for every Shopware customer, even for those who do not consider donations or have never donated before and have no knowledge about it.
This way, more people can be attracted to support charitable foundations.

This solution is simple and clear.
User can donate with only 2 clicks, so that the user is not overwhelmed by the amount of choice, and the donation is pleasant and easy.

The plugin supports good cause.
This is beneficial for both the foundation, the customer and the shop owner.

THE DESIGN PROCESS

A long journey to perfection

During hackathon we had many mentors from various fields at our disposal. We discussed with a lot of them and listened to their advices to perfect the final product.

We tested various prototypes with over 6 mentors and we implemented changes where we saw that something may not be working until the prototype became clear and usable without any errors.

The most important feedback was from the CEO of "Fundacja Dignum" charity. We were told that it's better not to give the user too many options when donating, because it can lead to frustration and, as a result, the user will decide not to donate at all.

The most difficult part was to properly design the look and layout of the information and buttons. We knew what functionality this plugin was supposed to have but it was really a challenge to give the plugin a design that would be clear and coherent. We created a lot of prototypes but most of them were confusing and took a lot of effort to understand.

REFLECTIONS

What I would do differently

We had only two days during the hackathon to create a solution and I think me and my team did a great job. W delivered a solution that is very accessible, useful and actually possible and easy to implement. It helps those in need and a lot of charities struggle to find a way to get more poeple's attention.

But when I think about the whole process of design, potential changes come to my mind. The most important thing was that, in the begining we wanted to do as much as we can possible think of. Everything that we thought would be useful to this plugin, we wanted to include in it. We were "throwing" ideas without actually thinking about which ones are worth attention. In the end, we created some prototypes that were very illegible and actually useless. Of course we quickly realised that we took the wrong path and we started filtering ideas and everything became much clearer. But this mistake cost us time and and timing was crucial.
